Paw Paws (or Pawpaws) are native fruit that have a tropical taste that is often described as being between a banana and a mango.

Description

Pawpaw is a native fruit‐bearing tree that grows from 15 to 30 feet tall, has purple blooms from April to May, and can tolerate wet soil and Black Walnuts. It can grow in part shade to full Sun (but does better in part shade). Pawpaws require cross‐pollination or can be pollinated by hand.

Each Paw Paw is sold in a biodegradable pulp pot that can be put into the ground when you transplant so there is no waste.

Below are some general rules of thumb for growing PawPaws:

  1. From Seed it can take four to seven years for fruit to start being produced.
  2. During the growing season they like to have at least 1" of Water (or moisture in the Soil) per week.
  3. PawPaws in Nature prefer to be partly shaded rather than in the full Sun. And they grow naturally in partly shaded areas on the edges of bodies of Water.
  4. Even though PawPaws are a late Summer harvest, their bloom time is April to May.
  5. Also to have a continuous supply of Trees, you can save either let them spread via suckers or put out Seeds from PawPaws every Fall to keep them going. PawPaws may do better with Nitrogen fixing Plants as they are heavy Nitrogen feeders. In a permaculture or polyculture planting, you may want to plant the following Plants with PawPaws:
    • Black Locust (they also spread by suckers and can provide shade for PawPaws along with Nitrogen)
    • Clover (whether native Clovers like White Prairie Clover and Purple Prairie Clover, or White Dutch Clover and Red Clover)
    • Comfrey and other dynamic accumulator Plants that will help to pull up nutrients from the deeper regions of the Soil
